About
“Knowing” across the curriculum involves a high degree of metacognitive thinking; not only are learners engaged in a specific topic, but they are also charged with drawing connections across the curriculum. A storytelling lens engages students across curricular strands by developing narrative understanding as well as supports cross-curricular connections. “Storying” content is a means of transmitting not only the conventions of story but also the story’s content, which is better understood when shared within a context. Humans have traditionally used story to teach culture and content, a way to transmit knowing from teller to listener; integrating digital tools may be an extension of this tradition, enhancing not only an understanding of the story’s content, but also an understanding of the narrative rules by which story is understood.
Student engagement is key to effective teaching and learning both within traditional and blended classrooms. Presenting content as story and allowing students to create narrative representations of their learning creates a favorable environment for student engagement. Furthermore, studies show that exploring content through a narrative or theatrical lens correlates to an increase in students’ understanding of concepts and competencies both within specific curriculum and across disciplines. This literature review will explore the ways in which using a storytelling lens as a pedagogical tool supports student learning in cross-curricular and technology-integrated settings.
This Webpage will explore storytelling to support teaching and learning across the curriculum in technology rich environments. Specifically, we will explore storytelling via:
